When dark creeps in and eats the light, this is when the roens time is right, you never see it the life they stole, your bodys there but not your soul.
Daddy came home drunk that night. I could tell because there was a half empty whisky bottle sitting on the kitchen table, my brother had just come in from doing his chores. "Did you put the horses in the barn boy?" dada asked. "No.....i forgot im sorry dad." he replied his voice trembling. "Have you got straw for brains? I ask you to do one simple job and all i get is I forgot. Well thats not good enough" "But dad i...." But dad nothing, lets go find a job you can actually do straw for brains." He grabbed the latern off the table and picked joey up by the collar and led him outside. he went towards the cornfield and ripped the screcrow clean off its post. He put joey on the post and tied his arms tighlyt to it. "Dad please no!" he screamed as dad walked away. I stayed there with him for two hours on that cold night. "Get in here cindy!" dad yelled across the field. I obeyed but i didnt want to leave joey there by himself.
Dad had fallen asleep with his head on the table and whisky bottle in hand. I put on my winter coat and headed out to see joey. His face was a pale as ever and he was shaking violently. I tried to untie him but it was too tight. "Hurry cindy, Hurry! Their coming cant you see them!" I tried and tried but it was just too tight. A sudden gust of wind knoked over the lantern and set the corfield on fire. "Help me their coming for me!" Joey screamed. The fire set his jacket on fire and he bagean to scream. It had also burned through the ropes that held him there he fell off the post and ran to me. " You werent fast enough." Joey said in a menacing voice. He began to chase me, throwing burning corn in my direction. The fire had not burned him as i did me. He hit me with the corn and i fell to the ground, Joey fell too. Face first right in a pile of snow. He got up and looked the veins in his face visable and black. The snow had hurt him, it was like frost bite on his face. i ran into the basement, he followed me right into my trap. I locked him in the dog cage. "Your not my brother!" "Maybe not but you cant hold me captive." Watch me" I closed the door of the shed and looked at him through the window. Everyday i looked at him through that window. 60 years passed and Joey was finally dead. He was all bones. The only thing left of him was the roen as i calle dit floating through out the room calling for me to let it out. But i never will.
